Chances are, you took one look at that chicken stamp, and knew exactly which artist illustrated it, without needing to read a single word on this page. Am I right? If not, you’re one of the few who haven’t yet discovered the joy that is the zany world of Sandra Boynton. Don’t worry – you’ll join us soon!
Sandra Boynton is the phenomenal storyteller and artist behind such classics as Barnyard Dance and Hippos Go Berserk, as well as over 4,000 greeting cards, more than 40 book (with over 60 million copies sold!), and now 5 music albums (one of which was nominated for a Grammy). Her work is internationally recognized on sight by millions of children, parents, and book lovers.
Nick and I love Sandra Boynton books, but until Workman Publishing contacted us about reviewing her newest release, we had no idea she wrote more than board books for babies. I can’t even tell you how excited we are to know there’s a whole world of Boynton we knew nothing about! So we are super excited to share with you our thoughts on Frog Trouble
Do you ever get sick of kids music that sounds…well, like “kids music”?? You know what I’m talking about. The “music” that’s screechy and cheesy and repetitive and obnoxious. Or worse, those collections of current adult songs that have been stripped of curse words and then recorded by kids…but with all of the negative and totally un-child-friendly messages still intact? As much as I hate endless repetitions of “the wheels on the bus go round and round”, I’ll take that over sexy 3rd graders any day.
Thanks to Sandra Boynton there’s finally a better option. Hallelujah!!
Frog Trouble is the 5th release in a series of music albums Sandra has produced in the last few years. Featuring award-winning and widely known and loved artist like Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley, these are not your typical children’s albums. Kids won’t be the only ones in the family grooving to these tunes!
There are so many great songs on this album, and the accompanying hardback book is a work of art unto itself. The book is broken up into sections, and is meant to be read while listening to the music…
Look While You Listen ~ this section features song lyrics and full page art for each song on the CD.
Sing And Play Along ~ featuring simple musical scores (basic piano or vocal, and guitar chords) with full song lyrics to every song, with cute illustrations throughout.
Meet The Performers ~ want to know more about the artists behind the album? Wish granted!
We loved all of the songs on the Frog Trouble album, but our favorites by far were:
When Pigs Fly
Ryan Adams
Beautiful Baby
Darius Rucker
Frog Trouble is available for purchase on Amazon, and you can also pick up the CD in a nice jewel case, or bundled with the book and a cute plush Boynton frog here.

Workman Publishing also sent us two of her previous CD and songbook releases, Blue Moo and Philadelphia Chickens.

Another ridiculously cute book, with wonderful music the whole family will love! Each songbook is broken up into the same three sections, with a couple of fun extras scattered throughout. Our favorite song from Blue Moo

Your Nose
Neil Sedaka

You can pick up a copy of Blue Moo on Amazon.

Philadelphia Chickens is a New York Times #1 Bestseller, and it doesn’t take a genius to guess why. Featuring a plethora of great artists, including Patty LuPone, it’s a sure crowd-pleaser. Our favorite gem from this album…

Please Can I Keep It?
Laura Linney

Okay, and this one…

15 Animals
John Stey

You can pick up a copy of Philadelphia Chickens on Amazon, too.

What is your favorite Sandra Boynton book? We love to read The Going-To-Bed Book or the Belly Button Book.

    1. I haven’t read The Going-To-Bed Book yet, but we love the Belly Button Book, and get it from the library at least once a month.

I love The Going to Bed Book. My kids always choose different characters that they are going to be that night and watch them from page to page. I also like the opposites book.

    1. Oh fun! We don’t own either of those titles, but I’m sure we will eventually.

Since I used to live in Philly, I’ve always liked Philadelphia Chickens by The Bacon Brothers, but we like all the Boynton CD/books we have. I Need a Nap by Weird Al is funny too.

    1. Hi Jeff ? I didn’t know you read my blog! I didn’t know you used to live in Philly, either. Cool! I’m glad to know someone I know is fond of these books/CDs. We sure enjoy them! We like Weird Al, too!

  8. I read Boynton’s books to my little ones back in the 80s. I even wrote tunes to But Not the Hippopotamus and The Going to Bed Book and we now sing them to the grandchildren. So, I’d have to say those two are my favorite because they are ensconced in memories!

    1. And I entered as Hana. 🙂

    2. That’s so cool! I didn’t realize they’ve been around that long. We love But Not The Hippopotamus, too. ?
