In all of my preparations for becoming a first time breast-feeding mother, the issue of breast size never really came up. It should have; it would have saved me a lot of frustration and pain.
You see, when you are a large busted woman, gravity can be one of your worst enemies when it comes to breast-feeding a tiny newborn. Simply put, if their head is smaller than their “milk dispenser”, you are going to be spending every feeding holding your boob to her tiny mouth while simultaneously trying to keep her head up, her nose clear, and your nipple from getting ripped off by that tiny, adorable, surprisingly-strong set of gums. Ladies, believe me – this hurts.
I don’t say any of this to scare my big chested sisters off of breast-feeding. Absolutely not! Yes, it can hurt – and no, doing it right does not always mean that it will be completely pain or discomfort free, whatever they tell you – but it is totally worth it. Eventually, your little darling will get the hang of nursing, your body will toughen up, you’ll resolve any issues like bad latch or thrush, and your baby will grow strong enough and big enough that she will be able to hold up her head, and help herself keep her nose clear of you while nursing (or she’ll plant her face in your boob, nurse like mad, then jump up to breathe – like my crazy liebling).
In the meantime, though, I know that it can be very hard – and downright discouraging – to nurse through the pain, or to feel trapped because both of your hands are trapped keeping your baby and breast in position, sometimes for what seems like hours on end. I felt that way, and struggled with feelings of guilt and frustration. Thankfully, a friend told me about a product that totally changed my life…
Utterly Yours makes a Breast Pillow that is designed especially for the well-endowed nursing mother. It is wedge-shaped, made from high-quality memory foam with a removable and washable cover that is soft and comfortable against your skin. It is designed to sit beneath your breast while you nurse your baby, holding it in place and at the perfect angle and height for nursing. Conveniently, it is small enough to easily fit in your diaper bag for on the go use, and is discreet – far more so than trying to wrestle your boob and baby with both hands down your shirt, for sure!
As you can see from the image on the front of the box, the Utterly Yours Breast Pillow is barely visible once your baby is engaged, and her chest butts right up against it, further holding it in place along with the weight of your breast. It is a soft creamy white, quilted for comfort, and breaths (it doesn’t make you sweat, nor does it absorb odor).
I took the above photographs to demonstrate the actual size. I chose a size large based on my measurements. As you can see, you can squeeze it and it compresses easily, but springs back into shape immediately upon release. I used this pillow with every single feeding in multiple positions for almost 3 months, and it held up remarkably well, never showing any signs of wear or breakdown. When Serenity was about 4 months old, I no longer needed the extra support, and I was able to pack it away for the next baby. Now there’s some bang for your buck!
The Utterly Yours Breast Pillow retails on their website for $24.95 + shipping and handling. Learn more about the pillow here, and be sure to check them out on Facebook.
A big “Thank you!!” to the Utterly Yours team for saving my bacon by sending me a complimentary Breast Pillow in exchange for this honest review.
